The Purpose Pinwheel Podcast

A workshop from Becks & Erica

Where do you draw the line?

Your values are on the website. But when a big cheque arrives from the wrong client, does anyone know what to say? Drawing the Line is a three-hour facilitated workshop that turns your brand purpose into clear, written rules: the work you accept, the work you turn down, and the behaviour you expect from everyone who works with you.

Values are easy to write. Lines are harder to hold.

Most businesses have a set of values. Integrity. Respect. Sustainability. They sound right, and nobody disagrees with them.

Then real decisions arrive.

  • A prospect offers a contract worth a third of your annual revenue, from a sector you've said you'd avoid.
  • A supplier comes in 20% cheaper, but you've heard how they treat their staff.
  • A long-standing client keeps speaking to your junior team in a way you wouldn't accept at home.

In those moments, the values on the wall don't help much. People fall back on gut feel, or on whoever is most senior in the room. The same question gets answered differently depending on the day, the pressure and the person. Your team learns that the values are what you say, not what you do.

The problem isn't that your values are wrong. It's that nobody has decided where the line actually sits.

What happens in the workshop

In three hours, you and your leadership team work through the questions most businesses put off until a crisis forces them.

1

Gather the evidence.

Before the session, each person privately names work they're proud of, work they regret taking on, and a moment they saw something that felt "not us". Those real examples show where your lines already are, even if nobody has written them down.

2

Test your values under pressure.

A value only counts if you'd pay a price to keep it. We look at what each one would cost you, and when you last acted on it when it was inconvenient. What survives gets rewritten as behaviour you can see and check.

3

Sweep the six spokes.

We work through the six areas of the Purpose Pinwheel framework: People, Planet, Processes, Policies, Profit and Performance. For each, you decide what you'll always do, what you'll never do, and what depends on the circumstances, with those circumstances written down.

4

Run the red line tests.

We run your answers against realistic scenarios built around your sector. Where the team splits, we've found a line that still needs drawing.

What you leave with

  • A one-page Non-Negotiables Charter, typed up and sent to you within five working days. It covers your purpose in one sentence, your values defined as behaviour, the work you'll always accept and always decline, your grey areas with clear conditions, what you expect from your team, clients and suppliers, and what happens when those expectations aren't met.
  • A two-question decision test anyone in your business can use before saying yes to something new.
  • A written note from Becks and Erica flagging any value that didn't hold up cleanly and any grey area still unresolved.
  • A leadership team that agrees, because they built the rules together rather than being handed them.

What changes afterwards

Decisions get faster, because the hard thinking has already been done. Your team stops checking with you on every borderline call, because they know where the lines are. Clients and suppliers see consistency, which builds more trust than any values statement. And when you turn work down, you do it with a clear reason rather than a vague unease.

This is how purpose stops being a statement and starts being your strategic differentiator.

Who this is for

This workshop suits founders and leadership teams of small and medium-sized businesses who already care about purpose but haven't turned it into working rules. It's a good fit if you've recently taken on work you regretted, if your team makes inconsistent calls on similar decisions, if you're growing and need others to decide the way you would, or if you're preparing for B Corp certification or a rebrand.

It isn't the right fit if you're looking for a values statement to publish and move on from. This session asks you to commit to things that may cost you business in the short term.
